ABOUT US

Aniin! My name is Ali Fontaine and I am the artist/designer/owner behind SHKOTAY MAKWA. I am Anishinaabe-Ojibway from Sagkeeng First Nation in Treaties 1, 3 and 5 territories (Southeastern Manitoba). I currently live in Treaty 6. I am also a singer-songwriter, mother, and law student.

SHKOTAY MAKWA is a clothing and lifestyle brand that aims to provide quality items to Indigenous individuals and allies of all ages, genders, and sizes. My designs and art are inspired by Anishinaabe language and culture - including my family and community. While some of my designs are created with fellow Anishinaabe in mind, I aim to include nation-inclusive designs for all Indigenous peoples and allies.

The name SHKOTAY MAKWA translates from Anishinaabemowin to English as "Fire Bear." It is my traditional name (and legal middle name). Ishkode/shkotay (fire) is a powerful element with many teachings. Makwa (bear) is also a powerful symbol in our culture and represents courage. I hope that these qualities translate to my art - and that individuals wearing my work feel powerful, courageous, confident, strong, and proud of who they are.
